Description Of Project
My second project for Mr. and Mrs. Sparks included the master bath suite. The existing master bath with steps into a sunken tub and one small vanity area had a low ceiling along one wall and various ceiling heights around a cross beam. The requests were for: increased individual storage, location for a small television, a freestanding tub, separate his and hers vanity areas and a brighter, open look for the shower/toilet room. The challenges included the possibility of existing post and tension floor below the sunken tub, an inside "L" shape wall area partly under the low ceiling area, inadequate light levels, flooring material changes, and how to integrate the various heights and slopes of the ceiling with cabinetry as it converged at the beam.
By eliminating the sunken tub, leveling and covering the floor throughout with one material of large limestone tiles on the diagonal provided the feeling of greater square footage. Taking the same light colored material into the shower/toilet room with 48" high wainscot, full height shower walls and ceiling, and clear tempered glass entry, gave a better proportion and lightness to the space. Moving the freestanding tub near the garden window gives a spa like feeling. Addressing the design solution for the sinks, I wrapped the solid limestone counter around the two available walls which provided two separate vanity areas with wall mounted faucets, and deep cabinetry. I resolved the ceiling variations at the beam by continuing a 12" d. by 9"-12" h. matching wood soffit with low voltage lighting over both counters. The cabinetry is in cherry with a rich deep stained finish. Beveled mirrors with matching moldings and low voltage lights gives lots of sparkle to the vanities. In the toilet/shower room, are included low flow fixtures and a tall storage cabinet for towels, etc. providing a bit of privacy and supply convenience.
