Description Of Project

Earthy. Organic. Nontraditional. These words best describe the style behind the design of this 215+ square foot master bathroom overlooking the Pacific Ocean. As evident from the before photos a lot had been overlooked after the birth of my client’s second son. Much of the peaceful, soothing environment for the adults had been stripped away. There were three main goals to achieve in this project: safety, sustainability and aesthetics.

After reviewing the requirements of the client and her family, the need to improve the overall safety of the space became evident. The tile step up into the bath tub she intended to continue using for herself and her children needed to be removed. In its place, the tub features a wide deck and easy to reach faucets. Furthermore, all NKBA guidelines were followed where possible with regards to lavatory placement, vanity heights, tub/shower surrounds and slip resistant flooring among others.

In addition to safety, sustainability played an important role to recreating a more eco-conscious space. Nearly all products used were from local warehouses and local vendors. The cabinetry was also made locally and finished with products that meet California’s stringent emissions laws. Only non VOC paints were used on the walls.

Lastly, was the quest to capture beauty and uniqueness. Genuine abalone hand-crafted on the East Coast was designed and cut to specification for each space including the backsplash and accents throughout the tub and shower enclosure. Attention was paid to the tumbled travertine listello in the floor. The installer altered every piece to ensure proper coloring. A steam shower was also added to increase the luxuriousness of the bathroom. It was the client’s openness to new ideas that allowed this ordinary bathroom to transform into modern elegance.
