Description Of Project

Ravaged by time and mold, the remodel of this older Mediterranean home was a difficult undertaking. The homeowner envisioned the results to reflect the best of her life’s experience and inspiration from travel in Italy. To make matters more complicated the owners purchased a rather large amount of new appliances (including multiple dishwashers, ovens, a steamer, a grill and griddle, a wine fridge, an espresso machine etc etc) prior to the hiring of a designer or development of a floor plan. My goals for the project were to capture the elements of a traditional, elegant kitchen while infusing the space with efficiency and visual intrigue.

The focal point of this kitchen is a furniture-esque cooking hutch outfitted with deep charcoal cabinetry and Enkeboll oak leaf and acorn detailing. The hutch boasts a unique backsplash fashioned from embossed hexagonal concrete pavers and custom spice storage pull outs that were designed when I found out that Enkeboll didn’t offer anything suitable for my project’s needs.

The drama of the dark hutch is balanced by the surrounding honey stained cabinetry and complimentary black ceramic hexagonal tiles. Local and sustainable woods were used along with low VOC stains and sealers because it was important to preserve resources and maintain good indoor air quality.

Black and gold granite countertops were selected after manually testing more than 25 materials for stain resistant properties and paired with rustic antique limestone flooring that contributed to safety and an ultra sophisticated look. The rich Old World aesthetic paired with “green” design principles delivers a distinct California feel.

*Repeating elements of acorn and oak leaf motif were used as a theme throughout the home in the tradition of old world architecture. This pattern can be found in custom ironwork as well as an entry way medallion in mosaic.
