Description Of Project
Large Contemporary Craftsman Kitchen
The clients moved to Southern California from Connecticut, and found our architecture and design to be a difficult challenge with their traditional furnishings. The original white kitchen with Mexican tiles was not what this family wanted. Upon meeting with them for the first time, we knew that a mix of traditional inset cabinet construction with a contemporary update would make them feel at home.
The original ceiling was vaulted to one side with a large exposed beam and floating soffits. We lowered the ceiling, softening the harshness of the original beam and creating a central focal point for the large plaster hood. Craftsman style pendant lights were suspended from a twisted monorail system.
Working with veneers and fine furniture details, this kitchen has unique qualities. Plenty of seating was added for everyday use as well as entertaining. A custom table with fiddle back veneer and marquetry was suspended from the peninsula, a favorite spot for the husband to read the morning newspaper.
Since they now lived in California and could make trips to the wineries; a built in Sub Zero wine unit was designed into the plan. This elevation, facing the family room, also had a matching wine glass storage cabinet and a serving counter. On the opposite side, a baking center was designed to hold the homeowner’s large mixer. This station also has the microwave drawer and an additional small refrigerator for more beverages. Large drawers hold all of her mixing bowls and small hand held appliances.
A wall of pantry cabinets was added, which included storage bins for dog food. A corner was utilized for her many cookbooks, conveniently located next to a planning desk. Two sinks, a wood worktop island, professional range and blower all complete this gourmet kitchen. |
