Description Of Project
The purpose was to transform a 1970s-era custom ranch kitchen into an open, contemporary kitchen with a fresh, high-end aesthetic, under an extremely tight budget of $50,000. To keep costs down, we had to work within the existing small infrastructure. This was our biggest challenge, to create the feeling of more space without knocking down walls or taking up space from the adjoining family room. We raised the ceiling up to share the same lines as the family room, reconfigured the layout so there is no longer a peninsula of cabinets separating the kitchen and family room, added a soffit with upward-facing spotlights on the South wall, and utilized only base cabinets on the West and North walls to create the visual impact of more openness. We also repositioned the refrigerator and stove to put the bulkiest items on the perimeter, and custom-built a vent hood that extended to the ceiling to bring the eye upwards when facing the kitchen. Due to this tight floorplan, we had to be creative in squeezing the client’s requirements for more counterspace, ample storage, a prep area, and a built-in workstation. We added a large island for more counterspace and equipped it with a prep sink at the Southwest corner and an outlet and stool at the other end for a workspace. The South wall cabinets were custom-built to be lowered to the countertop to provide for greater storage. After using basic stock cabinets, mid-to-lower range products that exude luxury without a high price tag (such as the pot-filler, granite, iridescent-glass tile, and wine refrigerator), an expansive backsplash, inexpensive wood trim pieces and floating shelves, an unexpected color scheme, and recessing the South wall cabinets combined with downward-facing lights, we achieved a unique, higher-end look the client was going for without blowing the budget. |
