Tom and Laura had a kitchen that didn't fit there lifestyle. With three college age daughters in the home and an active entertainment schedule, they needed their kitchen to be more of a social hub. We first attempted to design a  new kitchen in the existing space replacing the dinette for an island with seating. Though it greatly improved her storage and somewhat her movement Laura still didn't feel comfortable with the solution. After taking a couple weeks off from revisions it occurred to Laura that what she really wanted was her kitchen opened up to the family room. Now with a complete redesign, removing the wall between the kitchen and family room, we could allow guests as well as cooks to flow back and forth from cooking to entertaining. This created another problem. The wall we wanted to remove was bearing the weight of Tom and Laura's second story and roof. To remove the wall behind the sink we not only had to engineer a support beam and footings we also had to replace the shear support. The shear support was replaced by adding plywood to the entire wall behind the stove. Now the structure of the home was secure. Another challenge was creating enough seating for eight. This was accomplished by utilizing an l-shaped, angeled, peninsula and a 36” bar height table. We used the same granite on the table. Laura loved one of the displays in my showroom so we used it as a base for the color and textures in the room. The cabinetry is a medium toned Maple with a mix of a dark brown Cherry. I tied the two colors together through the crown and light rail moldings. Some of the “Mediterranean” acrutraments included acanthus corbels and an onlay over the refrigerator.
